Thanks for the invitation - or what I'm doing up at 4:45AM on Saturday

Good morning!

Thanks for the invitation to join this blog, Christie.

My wife and I moved here through the Arts Move Program about 8 weeks ago. I am a musician and music teacher, and have some training in things documentary, as well, with interests in audio, video and photography (no darkrooms, though, please), as well as some basic experience in web site design.

I'm interested in what Christie has told me about documentary efforts and ideas here (see my comments in my profile), especially as it regards music. The next few months, likely through the end of the year, will be taken up on the documentary front mainly with work on my final project for the certificate at Duke.

So, I'll have to browse around more as I have time to see what all is going on here, and am interested to see what might develop. Having moved from Raleigh, NC, to here since the beginning of the year, and basically starting over with the local teaching and performance aspects of things, I'm exploring to see what direction(s) to take here in Chattanooga. Some are clear, but many are not. Hopefully, seeing what you all are working on will help me to get more clear than not, and maybe offer me a local outlet in documentary, as I can be of help.

OK, it's too early to be writing this much. But it's pleasant to sit on my front porch, write, drink a bit o' tea, and listen to the birds and that factory fan/motor on the east side of the tracks at Rossville Blvd. OK, the fan isn't pleasant, but the birds are. ;-)

Cheers!

Could you have predicted any of this when you and Brady made that decision to buy your tickets for the first Cork Dulcimer Fest? I think it's very cool that you're my neighbor, and I'm so glad we all get to be involved in something BIG together...again!

Predict any of this? Never! No clue, i.e., clueless, about it! All I knew is we were getting to go to a dulcimer festival in Ireland! I had to change all my plans for summer dulcimer workshops and festivals, get our passports renewed, buy a new dulcimer and flight case to take to Ireland with me (Aw, shucks!), and all that. I've been changing my plans ever since! ;-) Well, only somewhat.

Several times over the last 5 or 6 years, Brandy and I have looked at each other and just shaken our heads at what going to Ireland that first time opened up to us - finding my family history, finding a connection to No. Ireland, making many goods friends there, meeting and playing with some wonderful musicians, learning to make documentaries, interviewing people for this HD in Co. Antrim doc, and, of course, moving here to Chattanooga! Yes, Christie, it's all your fault, and I'm glad it all happened. ;-)

And speaking of great things as I am, I don't know if you remember when we gave you flowers at the last event of the Cork Dulcimer Festival in the Corner Bar, and I said something about when we just do what we do, we do great things. To us, many times, what we do seems just what we do, and not something that's great, but we're wrong when we think that. When we just do what we do, we do something that no one else can do in just the same way we do it, and we do something great - we be ourselves and affect the world (and people) around us.

I guess that's what coming to Chattanooga is all about for many of us - just doing what we do (and thanks to Allied Arts and all for recognizing that that is something great, and the effect we have on each other and the community) and having it affect all around us, and through that the whole city and region.

It's taking us a while to unencumber ourselves of 20 years of stuff to settle in here in Chattanooga, but it's happening slowly but surely. Sometimes I get very frustrated at the seeming roadblocks or delays in getting ourselves settled, but in the end, I'm thankful for being here and for being a part of whatever happens. The more people we meet, the more I am amazed at the possibilities available. Right now they are just that for me - possibilities. But at some point all these possibilities will collapse into certainties one way or the other - something with which I end up being involved or not. (OK, so I was an engineer - quantum theory does have other applications, as does the energy state model of the atom - ever think how that relates to tuning your dulcimer?)

And even though I write a lot, I have not kissed the Blarney Stone. I heard too many jokes about what the Irish did to it. ;)

OK, 'nuff for now. Got to go eat some lunch and shop for a birthday present and office furniture. BTW - breakfast at Niedlov's! And very soon, lunch, as well! Yum!

HI and Welcome. I can't wait to meet and keep this converstaion going. I have also had a relationship with the CDS at Duke, but did not go for the full certificate...yet! I attended the inaugral class of the first summer institute there a few years ago and want to go back all the time. I too have had many conversations and big thoughts about how to devide a program in Chattanooga akin to some of the community/outreach initiatives thru CDS in the Durham neighborhoods. I have a curriculum book of one program from there Youth Durham.... there is so much potential and seemingly no reason not to bring that same energy and passion to AND forChattanooga. LETS DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

breakfast at neidlovs?
lunch at ZarZarrs?
Mojitos on Christie's porch?

Mary

Christie had mentioned an upcoming meeting about all this - was it on Monday? I'm just waiting to hear when and where it is.
